Hey young people, I just celebrated my 3rd Chinese New Year away from home. Besides missing visiting relatives and friends, I've almost forgotten the taste of pineapple tarts! Well in truth I miss a lot more than just that. I certainly miss Bethany.
The love for God and His word, the fellowship of His people, and that genuine care for one another are some aspects that stand out. As always, God has been most gracious, and here are some things I've learnt through my experiences here.
1. God in all nations
Firstly, I can certainly testify of His protection and provision time after time. I'm especially thankful for the wonderful church over here He has blessed me with. It's so exciting to see other brothers and sisters in Christ from so many different nations gather together to worship and study His word. I am reminded of Psalm 27:4,
One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord. All the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.
As fellow students, I'm sure you can relate to the times when you are just so busy and overwhelmed. I certainly have and often asked myself what am I seeking? While most will be hesitant to admit, many students here subscribe to the mentality of "a first, a blue, a spouse". It basically means to obtain a first-class degree to secure a career, receive the fame from representing the university at a major sport, and somehow having time to find a partner for life. Although these are by no means vices, the temptation to chase the world and control destiny is very high. It all boils down where my heart truly is and what I seek after. Thus, I have been deeply challenged over the past years to echo David's desire even while in a foreign land. Again I'm very grateful to Bethany, and how Pastor Mitch takes the time and trouble to keep in touch with me, to make sure I'm doing fine.
2. God for all nations
I'm also thankful for the opportunity to meet other international students and share with them the good news of Jesus! Every friday evening, I get to host a 'cafe' session at church where people can come and play board games and have fun. They also have a chance to stay for a short Bible study examining the identity of Christ through the gospels. It is indeed great joy to tell people from around the world about who He is and how much He loves us. It definitely makes me appreciate all that we do in India and Myanmar. At the same time, it has been a very humbling journey as I learn to trust in Him for my friends' salvation. So all in all, I've much to praise Him for and hope you have many reasons too!
