TOPIC OF PROPHECY: THE MESSIAH'S DIVINE IDENTITY

THE DIVINE MESSIAH

The word “Messiah” in prophetic literature had a special significance. The following text would bear this out.

“For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah 9:6

1. The Physical nature of the Messiah

a) He will have a body (Cf. John 1:14)

b) He will be the unique Son of God (Cf. John 3:16)

2. The Divine Nature of the Messiah

a) The attributes or titles given to Him help identify and establish His Divinity

b) No other human being would have such titles ascribe to him

c) No human being could live up to these attributes

d) Only the Divine Messiah would be able to fulfill all that has been prophesied of Him

3. His Divine attributes

a) Mighty God

b) Everlasting Father
i) This title is not to be misunderstood

ii) It is best seen as a great title honouring the Messiah

iii) The title “father” can be used to refer to a Teacher par excellence

iv) It can also be used to refer to a King par excellence

v) It can also be used to address a great Prophet

Only the Lord Jesus fulfilled all these things in His life and ministry.
