Text: Isa 4; Zechariah 12-14

TOPIC OF PROPHECY: JERUSALEM

A NUMBER OF PROPHETIC TEXTS CONCERNING JERUSALEM

One of the themes of prophecy concerns the city of Jerusalem. Isaiah’s prophecy concerning Jerusalem had the following details (Cf. Isaiah 4:3-6).

1. The purging/cleansing of Jerusalem

“ When the LORD has washed away the filth
of the daughters of Zion, and purged the blood
of Jerusalem from her midst, by the spirit of judgment
and by the spirit of burning…”
Isaiah 4:4

a) A historic reference

b) Jerusalem was purged by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar (Cf. Jeremiah 39)

2. Remnant to inhabit Jerusalem

“ And it shall come to pass that he who is left in Zion
and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy-
everyone who is recorded among the living in Jerusalem.”
Isaiah 4:3

a) Only the very poor were left behind

b) The following text notes the people who remained behind
“But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left in the land
of Judah the poor people, who had nothing, and gave them
vineyards and fields at the same time” Jeremiah 39:10

3. Future Reference

“ Then the LORD will create above every dwelling place
of Mount Zion, and above her assemblies, a cloud and smoke
by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night.
For over the glory there will be a covering.
And there will be a tabernacle for shade in the daytime for heat,
For a place of refuge, and for a shelter from storm and rain.”
Isaiah 4:5-6

a) Reminiscent of the days of Moses

b) The glory of God would guard Jerusalem day and night

c) A “tabernacle” would provide refuge and shelter for all in need
