THE DAY OF THE LORD OF HOSTS

The phrase “the day of the LORD of Hosts” is an oft-repeated one. Let us ponder the following text.

“ For the day of the LORD of hosts
Shall come upon everything proud and lofty,
Upon everything lifted up-
And it shall be brought low…”

Isaiah 2:12

Let us carefully consider how Isaiah applied this phrase.

1. The Revelation of the Greatness of God
The Day of the LORD of hosts will reveal the greatness of God.

“ Enter into the rock, and hide in the dust,
From the terror of the LORD
And the glory of His majesty.
The lofty looks of man shall be humbled,
The haughtiness of men shall be bowed down,
And the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.”

Isaiah 2:10-11

a) In direct contrast
i) In terror man will try and hide himself in rocks or dig into the ground
ii) He will no more be full of pride/arrogance

b) Features of the greatness of God include the following:-
i) The “terror of the Lord” (God’s Personal Presence will cause terror in the heart; so awesome is He)!
ii) God’s glorious majesty will be revealed!

2. Casting idols away in shame
We have an interesting description of how idolaters would cast away their idols in the Day of the LORD of hosts.

“ In that day a man will cast away his idols of silver
And his idols of gold which they made,
Each for himself to worship.
To go into the clefts of the rocks,
And into the crags of the rugged rocks,
From the terror of the LORD
And the glory of His majesty,
When He arises to shake the earth mightily.”

Isaiah 2:20-21

The reader is greatly challenged by this picture of the Day of the Lord of Hosts! He must not wait till that Day of Judgment comes! He must seek to ready himself for that great Day of the Lord of Hosts!
