POETIC LITERATURE


The Scriptures also contain poetic literature. The full range of poetic literary genre is to be appreciated. The following forms may be highlighted in particular:-

1. Proverbial statements

a) Short pithy sayings

b) Deep truths contained within these sayings

2. Psalms

a) Hebrew metre

b) Unique Hebrew parallelism

It is said that of all the portions of Scriptures, the psalms are the most widely read!

APPRECIATING THE PROPHETIC SCRIPTURES

There is another type of literature that we must take careful note of- Prophetic Scripture! It may be said that the bulk of the Scriptures is prophetic literature! Let us take time to study and appreciate the significance of the prophetic Scriptures.

“The word of Isaiah the son of Amoz saw
concerning Judah and Jerusalem.”
Isaiah 2:1

1. The word “saw”

a) This hints at a vision that God used to communicate His word to His prophets

b) Visions-
i) A powerful way of communicating a message/ a truth

ii) They were vivid as well as illustrative

2. “The word of Isaiah”
a) Visions were first studied carefully

b) They were then communicated through preaching and teaching

c) Each vision would contain a special message from the Lord Himself

d) Each vision-message is carefully identified as from the Lord (Cf. Isaiah 1:24)
