THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LITERARY GENRE FOUND IN THE SCRIPTURES


There are a number of literary genres found in the Scriptures. The following may be highlighted:-

1. Historical

The following things may be appreciated concerning history recorded in the Scriptures.

a) This type of literature records history

i) Event

ii) Main people

iii) Historical setting

b) It does more than merely record

i) It seeks to analyse

ii) It seeks to give a theological perspective

iii) It is preserved as teaching material for subsequent generations

2. Legal Tomes

The Book of Deuteronomy stands out as an example of this kind of literature!

a) Judicial laws are stated carefully

b) The spiritual aspect of the law is highlighted:-

i) That God is Holy

ii) He expects His people to have a high regard for His holy law

iii) He expects full compliance from His people

iv) Blessing and curses (penalties) are also recorded

v) The religious aspect of the law is never far away from judicial pronouncement

Israel’s special relationship as God’s people was meant to be highlighted!
