WRONG
BELIEFS
It is possible to have good intentions and yet have wrong beliefs. It is
also possible to be sincere but be dreadfully wrong in a belief system. This
was something that Israel ended up with in the days of Isaiah. Let us ponder
the following text.
“To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifice to Me?
Says the LORD.
I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams
And the fat of fed cattle.
I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs or goats.
Bring no more futile sacrifices;
Incense is an abomination to Me.
The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and the calling of assemblies-
I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting.
Your New Moons and your appointed feasts My soul hates;
They are a trouble to Me, I am weary of bearing them.”
Isaiah 1:12-14
1. It was God who gave this system of worship
a) The system of worship was given by the Lord through Moses to ancient
Israel
b) This system of worship was carefully prescribed!
c) Yet in the above text, God disdained these very expressions of worship
He commanded
2. A short list of things that God dismissed
a) Sacrifices like Burnt offerings were called “futile”
b) Worse, they wee called “an
abomination”
c) God refused these
expressions of worship… saying that He was “weary
of bearing them”
WHAT WENT WRONG?
Something must have gone dreadfully wrong for God to make these statements?
The answer lies in the context of Isaiah 1. When people continued in the
way of sin, when people lived in ignorance of God and His word, when people
have essentially turned away from God… then all the so-called expressions
of worship are offered in vain! So many today persist in external religiosity,
but lack the vital relationship of faith in God. Only when faith is real
and well expressed in life, then worship would be acceptable!
