UNDERSTANDING THE CAUSES OF SPIRITUAL IGNORANCE

A SUNDAY SCHOOL COMMITTED TO TEACHING THE SCRIPTURES

The Sunday School ministry is as old as the Church. In fact the Sunday School ministry began even before the first worship service was held at Bethany at 20 Jalan Lakum in Seletar Hills. Let us determine that we will remain as committed as ever, to the faithful dissemination of God’s word.

THE CAUSES THAT BRING ABOUT SPIRITUAL/BIBLICAL IGNORANCE

For easier comprehension, we may list the following causes. Four are highlighted:-

1. Problem of unresolved iniquity Isaiah 1:4

2. Problem of corruption Isaiah 1:4

3. The forsaking of the Lord Isaiah 1:4

4. Turning away from the Lord Isaiah 1:14

THE CONSEQUENCES OF TURNING AWAY FROM GOD

Where there is a cause, there will also be consequences. Sometimes, where the causes are deep and severe, so are the consequences.

1. Disciplined by the Lord
The following text bears this terrible thought of being disciplined by the Lord.
“Why should you be stricken again?
You would revolt more and more.
The whole head is sick and the whole heart faints.” Isaiah 1:5

2. Desolation in the country
When a country loses the Lord’s protection and blessing, this is what may transpire.
“Your country is left desolate,
Your cities are burned with fire,
Strangers devour your land in your presence
And it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.” Isaiah 1:7

TEACHING WITH A GREAT SENSE OF CONVICTION

We cannot ignore the powerful spiritual truths taught in the Scriptures. We must combat spiritual ignorance at every level. Let us renew our commitment to teach the Word of God will all the power that we can find from the Lord. Let us reach out to all coming to Sunday School with the mighty word of God. Let us teach with conviction.
