INTERPRETING TEXTS THAT DEAL WITH THE SUBJECT OF SIN

It is so easy to criticize and condemn sin and sinners! It is also easy to misread the Biblical texts when they touch on the subject of sin. Consider the following text.

“Alas, sinful nation,
A people laden with iniquity,
A brood of evildoers,
Children who are corrupters!
They have forsaken the LORD,
They have provoked to anger
The Holy One of Israel,
They have turned away backward.” Isaiah 1:4

How should we handle and interpret such texts?

1. Things to avoid

a) Avoid a spirit of condemnation

b) Avoid an unkind spirit

c) Avoid a fault-finding spirit

d) Avoid a spirit of doom

2. Things to adopt

a) A spirit of compassion

b) A spirit of sorrow

c) A spirit of identification with sinners

d) A spirit of love and understanding for sinners

GUARDING OURSELVES

The words of the apostle come to mind as we ponder teaching on the subject of sin.
“Now all these things happened to them as examples,
and they were written for our admonition…

Therefore, let him who thinks he stands take heed
Lest he fall.” 1 Corinthians 10:11-12
