DEALING WITH POOR RESPONSES FROM PUPILS

Every teacher desires to have his pupils respond positively to the Word of God taught. However, often the reverse is true. Many pupils do not respond as hoped. How may we learn to teach without feeling totally discouraged?

AN EXAMPLE OF POOR RESPONSE

The following text offers an example of “poor response.”
“But you have not called upon Me, O Jacob;
and you have been weary of Me, O Israel.” Isaiah 43:22

After these opening words, the following things were listed (as poor response).

1. With reference to prayer
Israel did not practise calling upon the Lord (Cf. Isaiah 43:22)

2. With reference to worship
God was not honoured in worship (Cf. Isaiah 43:22)

3. With reference to offerings
The heart to make meaningful sacrifices was not there (Cf. Isaiah 43:23-24)

4. With reference to sin
Israel seemed to have indulged in sin (Cf. Isaiah 43:24)

Isaiah seemed to have had a very hard time in ministry. Nevertheless, he persevered in his ministry as a prophet, and as a teacher of God’s word. Let us draw much encouragement from the example of Isaiah.

NOT DISCOURAGED

God however was not discouraged by the poor response of the nation. He chose to look at things positively.

1. The offer of forgiveness of sins (Cf. Isaiah 43:25-26)

2. However, a solemn word of warning had to be given.
If Israel continued to walk in its sinful ways, then the nation must be prepared to be severely reproached for its iniquities (Cf. Isaiah 43:27-28)

3. There was also the promise of the continued Presence of God ( Cf. Isaiah 43:1-5)

4. There was an added promise of restoration (with reference to Israel in particular
(Isaiah 43:6-7)
