A
NEW DIMENSION OF THE IDEA OF “CALLING”
The Scriptures are deep and wondrous to all are drawn to ponder over them.
Isaiah 49 gives a very rich insight as to the idea of “calling” where
the Messiah is concerned.
“Listen, O coastlands, to Me,
And take heed, you peoples from afar!
The LORD has called Me from the womb;
From the matrix of My mother
He has made mention of My name”
Isaiah 49:1
1. There were some who queried Jesus as to His identity
a) His own family members thought He was besides Himself Mark 2:21
a) The religious leaders believed that he was in league with Beelzebub Mark
2:22
2. But if given half the chance Jesus would have loved to explain His calling
a) “Listen, O coastlands… Take heed…”
i) This expresses the delight and joy of Jesus in His calling
ii) It also expresses His confidence and certainty in God’s
calling
b) “The LORD has called Me from the womb”
i) This is not an uncommon expression at all (Cf. Jeremiah 1:5)
ii) Jesus traced His calling to God’s election and
foreknowledge
iii) Even when He was in His mother’s womb, God had
set Him apart
c) “He made mention of My name”
i) This signifies the Lord’s deep and personal involvement
ii) It also signifies a wonderfully affectionate relationship
DELIGHT IN THE IDEA OF GOD’S CALLING TO US
What a wonderful thing it is to be given a calling to serve the Lord! We may
not be able to express with the same certainty as the Messiah, but the principles
of God’s calling to all His servants actually are based on the same
principles! Rejoice!
