WHAT DOES
IT MEAN TO BE A SERVANT OF GOD?
We will most likely have our own ideas as to what it means to be a servant of
God. Let us take time to meditate on the following text.
“And now the LORD says,
Who formed Me from the womb to be His servant,
To bring Jacob back to Him.
So that Israel is gathered to Him.
(For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the LORD,
And My God shall be My strength)” Isaiah 49:5
1. From the Perspective of God
a) Our human perspective
This is not invalid. It is natural to have our own personal, human perspective.
b) The Lord’s perspective
This must be included! This perspective must override some if not all of our
human understanding of what it means to be a servant of God.
2. Formed from the womb
a) God’s plan
God’s plan was thought of, and designed long before we were born! What
a tremendously profound thought this is!
b) Jesus as our Classic and Supreme Example
God designed the Lord Jesus Christ to be our classic and supreme example. He
could have given Him many titles, many roles… but no, He formed Him
to be a Servant right from the start!
AN APPRECIATION OF THE CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF JESUS AS SERVANT
It was the apostle Paul who picked up on the significance of Jesus as a Servant
of God. In what is known as the “kenosis passage” (Philippians
2:5-11; “kenosis” means “emptying”), Paul spoke of
how Jesus though He was equal to God, “made Himself of no reputation,
taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men” (Philippians
2:7). The kenosis passage well reflects what Isaiah prophesied concerning
the Lord Jesus as a Servant of God.”
SEEKING TO BE GOOD SERVANTS OF GOD
Let us cultivate this same mindset adopted by the Lord Jesus Himself. Let us
make ourselves of no reputation too. Let us seek to serve as humble servants
of God!
