THE
TEACHER AS ONE WHO FULFILS GOD’S COMMANDMENTS
One of the most important challenges
of life and ministry may be found in the words Jesus uttered.
“Do
not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets.
I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.” Matthew 5:17
1. Latent Fear
This was a powerful latent fear of many. As long as this fear was not addressed
and dealt with thoroughly, the hearts of many would not be open to the Lord’s
teachings at all.
a) The general populace
They did not know Jesus well. They also did not know the Scriptures well too.
How would they know that Jesus would not come and destroy the Law and/or
the Prophets?
b) The religious leaders (Scribes, Pharisees etc)
These had very strong traditional ideas about the Law and/or the Prophets.
Their approach may be described as:-
i) Legalistic
ii) Slavish
2. Allaying fears
Jesus sought to allay this latent fear in e very gracious and gentle manner.
a) Words of assurance
This was the first thing that Jesus sought to do. He had to assure His listeners
that He had not come to destroy the Law and/or the Prophets!
b) Fulfilment of the Law and the Prophets
This was quite a statement. This was the best proof He could offer His listeners!
Let us consider the significance of fulfilling the Scriptures!
i) The Highest regard
for God’s
word is demonstrated
ii) The Holiest regard for God Himself is evidenced
iii) The Healthiest reverence is to be found in the way one seeks to live
out
the truth of God’s word
A GREAT CHALLENGE INDEED
Let us take seriously the Sunday School Ministry. Let us seek to emulate the
example of the Lord Jesus. Let us seek to fulfill the Scriptures!
