THE PREACHING AND TEACHING MINISTRIES OF JESUS

The Lord Jesus Christ was engaged in both the teaching and preaching ministries. These are ministries that may be distinguished. The following text sheds important light.

“And Jesus went about all Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues,
preaching the gospel of the kingdom…”
Matthew 4:23

1. The Ministry of Preaching

a) Lexical meaning of the word “preach” (“kerusso”)
This word simply means “to make an announcement. The idea behind this word is that of proclamation.

b) The content of the preaching ministry of Jesus
The content was “The Gospel of the Kingdom.” Jesus sought to proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God.

i) That it had drawn near
ii) That anyone could enter in, if he repented of his sins

2. The Ministry of Teaching

a) Lexical meaning of the word “teach” (“didasko”)
This word focuses on the idea of instruction. The teacher’s task is that of giving instruction to all who wished to learn.

b) The content of the teaching ministry is vast

i) Kingdom of God issues were taught
ii) Many other subjects were also addressed

 

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TEACHING MINISTRY

The ministry of Teaching must be viewed as something necessary and significant. Five positive features may be highlighted:-

1. Teaching effectively deals with the problem of ignorance

2. Teaching effectively helps to resolve controversies

3. Teaching helps to clarify issues that may otherwise be confusing to people

4. Teaching aids and even enhances the ministry of preaching

5. Teaching takes to task false and erroneous concepts that have hurt many
