is God's minister
" Romans 13:4
A
DEEPER PERCEPTION
Paul went on
to offer an even deeper perception of how one should view rulers.
"For
he is God's minister to you for good.
But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not
bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister,
an avenger to execute wrath on him who practises evil."
Romans 13:4
1. "He
is God's minister (servant
"diakonon")"
a) Twice Paul
uses the word "minister" to describe rulers.
b) The word
chosen describes one who is no more than a lowly servant of God.
2. "God's
minister for good"
a) God has appointed
rulers to govern human affairs.
b) Rulers will
have a high regard for those who do good.
3. 'God's
minister, an avenger"
a) He is also
God's minister in another capacity.
b) He bears
"the sword".
i) This is a
reference to the strength of his authority.
ii) This is
a reference to the power invested in the ruler.
iii) This is
not a ceremonial sword,
4. "To
execute wrath on him who practises evil"
a) The ruler
has God's backing when he uses his authority to bear on those bent
on doing evil.
b) He will execute
wrath on evil perpetrators.
i) He represents
God's authority.
ii) He upholds
justice and puts down evil doers.
