1:18 THE
WRATH OF GOD Difficult though it may be, Paul had to deal with
the doctrine of "the wrath of God". Without any sense of rancor Paul
introduced this topic with these words. "For
the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness
of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be
known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them." Romans
1:18-19
In
order to understand this doctrine correctly, perhaps it would be helpful to break
down Paul's thoughts into bite-size ideas:- 1.
Is anger consistent with the Character of God? a)
Yes! b) God's
holiness is affronted by the wickedness and sinfulness of men! 2.
What are some things that make God angry? a)
Persistent ungodliness b)
Persistent unrighteousness c)
Persistent suppression of the truth 3.
What is one clear-cut expression of God's wrath? The
following text well illustrates why God is angry with man!
"Then the LORD saw that
the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the
thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. The earth also was corrupt
before God, and the earth was filled with violence. So God looked upon the
earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on
the earth." Genesis 6:5, 11-12
Let
us note the following descriptions! a)
The wickedness of man was great in the earth. b)
Every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually c)
All flesh had corrupted their way on the earth
