12 Romans
1 "
your
faith is spoken of throughout the whole world
" Romans 1:8 A
GOOD DISCIPLE OF THE RISEN SAVIOUR Paul was a good and faithful
disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. Though it was not his privilege to have been
one of the original disciples of Jesus, nevertheless, through special revelation
and instruction, he proved himself to be a very good disciple. In
writing this wonderful word of commendation to the believers in Rome, we are reminded
of how Jesus Himself commended those who possessed great faith (Cf. Luke 7:9). COMMENDATION
WHERE IT IS DUE Paul
was happy and impressed with the faith of the believers in Rome. He wrote freely
from his heart, "First,
I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken
of throughout the whole world." Romans 1:8
1.
Thanking God This is right and appropriate! How should we appreciate
Paul's sentiments here? a)
Consciousness of God's blessing Ultimately,
the growth of faith must be traced to the Lord and His gracious blessing. b)
Commencement and Continuation of faith God's hand must be appreciated
for both the beginning and the development of faith. 2.
Through Jesus Christ The
role of the Lord Jesus must also be acknowledged. a)
He has always worked closely with His Father (Cf. John 5:17) b)
The work of generating faith and growing it must also be seen as the work of Christ. 3.
Wherein is the commendation? a)
The human part The Roman believers must have shown a wonderful sense of
dedication to cultivate their faith. b)
Impact of faith The
faith of the believers in Rome was so significant that they touched "the
world". This outstanding faith needed to be commended!
