Study 219

Text: Psalm 52

WHY DO PEOPLE NOT FORSAKE EVIL?

It seems strange that anyone should continue in his evil ways, given the fact that the ultimate result is certain destruction! Let us consider some of the reasons why people continue to follow after the ways of evil! Let us look at four considerations:-

1. “Why do you boast in evil, O mighty man?” (Psalm 52:1)

a) When a person feels he is mighty, he tends to think that nothing can touch him

b) When he starts boasting about his might, this sense of security (false though) deepens

2. The Evil Use of the tongue (Psalm 52:2-4)

a) Some think that they are smart when they use their tongues shrewdly

b) Some even enjoy rough and vulgar language

c) In time, the wicked use of the tongue feels “normal”

d) Those who do not use the tongue in similar fashion are dismissed as weak people

3. “God shall likewise destroy you forever” (Psalm 52:5)

a) There is no fear of God in the heart of the wicked

b) He does not believe in the judgment of God either

c) He does not believe in eternity

d) Hence the wicked tends to sin with impunity!

4. “Trusted in the abundance of his riches” (Psalm 52:7)

a) Wealth aids the wicked to think that he is successful

b) He is led into the false belief that his wealth will last forever

c) He enjoys all that his wealth brings him and is thus caught up in sinful ways

d) He finds himself strengthening his position in wickedness

e) When final destruction comes, the wicked is already beyond care!
