Text: Psalm 22

MESSIANIC APPLICATION

What is most striking as we read Psalm 22 is the number of references what could make sense only if they were applied to the Messiah- the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us take another look at the list of these references:-

1. "They gaped at Me with their mouths" Psalm 22:13

This is an apt description of the enemies of the Lord Jesus Christ, as they gazed at Him at Calvary (Cf. Matthew 27:39-44)

2. "They pierced My hands and feet" Psalm 22:16c

This was literally fulfilled when the Lord Jesus was crucified (Cf. Matthew 27:35).

3. "They divide My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots" Psalm 22:18

Again, we have another literal fulfillment recorded in the Gospels (Cf. Matthew 27:35; Luke 23:34).

WHAT IS THE POINT OF THESE MESSIANIC REFERENCES?

There are many lessons one can draw from a careful study of these Messianic references. Three lessons may be highlighted:-

1. A deeper understanding of what it means to be involved in a battle against wickedness

Sometimes, we only have a vague and theoretical understanding of what it means to battle evil! We do not fully comprehend the degree to which wicked men can sink in their battle against righteousness! The suffering the Lord Jesus endured helps us to understand spiritual lots better!

2. A deep appreciation of the suffering the Messiah Himself had to endure

We often grow weary too easily in our battle against wickedness. We give in to fear. We yield and concede the battle to the enemy! We need not do that. We should not do that! We must learn from the Lord Jesus how we may battle with great courage!

3. A galvanizing of the soul to battle even more valiantly against evil!

Our souls need to find more strength! We are capable of possessing great strength! This special strength is something that God alone must give to us. We will never find that strength in ourselves!

Let us be challenged to find that same source of strength the Lord Jesus evidenced in His life as he struggled against sin and wickedness!

Let us cease to be spiritual weaklings. Let us be deeply moved and challenged to find even greater strength and courage in the continuing battle against powerful spiritual forces. Thank God we need not go into spiritual battle unarmed and alone (Cf Ephesians 6:10-18)
