Study 76
Text: Psalm
22
FALSE BRAVADO
Fears will naturally arise if one were to face "strong bulls," or
"a raging and roaring lion, " or "dogs." It would be false
bravado to say that one is totally unafraid of the fierce enemy. How does one
actually face up to a wicked and powerful enemy?
ADMISSION
OF LIMITED HUMAN STRENGTH
The psalmist was deeply concerned. That was obvious and very normal too. It
is wise to admit that we have but very limited human strength against the tide
of wickedness that threatens to overwhelm. He confessed his feelings in prayer
very honestly.
"I am poured out like water,
And all My bones are out of joint;
My heart is like wax;
It has melted within Me.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And My tongue clings to My jaws.
You have brought Me to the dust of death."
Psalm 22:14-15
1.
"My heart is like wax; It as melted within Me"
It is all right to admit all these feelings? And the answer is "YES!"
Is it a sin to be so fearful? Thankfully, the answer is "NO!" We must
carefully distinguish between fear and cowardice.
a) Fear is a normal feeling
b) Cowardice is giving in to fear!
Its is not a sin to admit to feelings of fear! However, feelings are just "feelings." They are not sinful in themselves!
2.
"My strength is dried up like a potsherd"
Is it all right to feel exhausted and weak? Thankfully, the answer is "Yes!"
God knows and understands the limits of human strength and endurance!
3.
"You have brought Me to the dust of death"
This statement is not to be read as if God is being blamed! This is just a mere
statement of fact!
4.
"My bones are out of joint"
These terrible well describe the sufferings that the Lord Jesus had to endure
when He was crucified!
How our precious Saviour must have suffered! Yet, He never gave in to His feelings!
His heart and mind still dwelt on His Father- even as He came "to the dust
of death." How we must learn the lesson of faith and trust in God well!
