Text: Psalm 13

APPLYING FAITH AND MORE

It is obvious that David applied his faith in the Lord even as he struggled with his frazzled emotions. This is evident in the following text.

"But I have trusted in Your mercy;
My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord
Because He has dealt bountifully with me."

Psalm 13:5-6

1. "Faith" and "Trust"

"Faith" may be said to be "a New Testament word." The "Old Testament" equivalent is the word "trust." Though one could possibly make distinctions between the two words, both share many common properties.

a) Reliance on God

Both words portray reliance or dependence on God! Faith is believing that God cares enough to respond to prayer. Trust has essentially the same idea!

b) Hope in God

There is a strong element of hope in God. David looked forward to God answering his prayer. He believed that God would not forsake him or leave him forlorn. Therein was hope expressed!

2. The Basis of Trust

What was the basis of David's trust in the Lord? Mercifully, David had a long-standing relationship of faith in God. Since he was a young lad, he learned what it meant to include God in his life. Over the years he had developed a strong relationship with God. Thus he could say these words, with a deep sense of trust

"Because He has dealt bountifully with me."
Psalm 13:6b

Past experiences with God told an important story. One can rely on this great God. Trust in Him is NEVER in vain! With this thought in mind, David exercised his faith in God.

ENCOURAGEMENT TO THE SOUL

One of the things that David wisely practised was to make every effort to get out of his sad feelings. Being musical was a great advantage. He chose to sing songs of deliverance and hope. These songs brought encouragement to his soul.

"My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation…
I will sing to the Lord"

Psalm 13:5b-6a

We have such a great heritage of spiritual hymns. They should be utilized to bring constant encouragement to the soul! We need to keep our spirits up in this great spiritual battle against evil. May there always be "songs in the night" (Job 35:10)
