Text: Psalm 2

A STRONG THEOLOGICAL GRID

It is of utmost importance that a strong theological grid be built up and maintained. This was something the psalmist possessed. His theology became his bulwark of strength as he struggled in prayer against the obvious and powerful presence of evil.

POINTS OF THE THEOLOGICAL GRID

What were some of the salient points of the theological grid maintained? Let us consider the following thoughts:-

1. The Majestic Sovereignty of God

One of the most striking features of the theological grid maintained was the sense of awe and awareness of the sovereignty of God. This may be found in the following text.

"He who sits in the heavens shall laugh;
The Lord shall hold them in derision.
Then He shall speak to them in His wrath,
And distress them in His deep displeasure."

Psalm 2:4-5

a) "He who sits in the heavens"

God is portrayed as One who sits in the heavens! He is thus way above puny mankind!

b) "He… shall laugh"

What are the feeble efforts of wicked men in the sight of God? He laughs at the presumption of wicked men! Did they really think that evil could prevail?

c) "The Lord…"

God is described as "Lord." He is surely supreme in His power and might! In His position of might, He holds His enemies in derision.

d) The wrath of God

The rage of men is at best ineffectual. On the other hand, the wrath of God is NOT! His wrath is to be feared.

e) The Deep Displeasure of God

The wicked must beware! They run the risk of incurring the deep displeasure of God. Evil men would only invite distress to themselves if they were to continue in their sinful ways!

2. Application of the Sovereignty of God in Prayer and Life

Whenever evil seems all-pervasive, it is wise to consciously apply the knowledge of the sovereignty of God in prayer and in life. This special exercise of faith will fend off fear and trepidation! Faith in the sovereignty of God is the best defence in his struggles in prayer. Evil cannot prevail against the Majestic Sovereignty of God!
