Psalm 16 30 October 2000
DEEP TRUST
A REFLECTION
ON WHERE WE PUT OUR TRUST
1. Trust must always be put "IN THE LORD" Ps 16:1
2. Wisdom teaches us to distinguish between trust in self (human
goodness)
and God's goodness Ps 16:2
3. Steadfast faith teaches us never to turn to "another god"
Ps 16:4
WHAT
IT MEANS TO HAVE FULL TRUST IN THE LORD
1. With reference to material things
a) It means making the Lord the "portion of our inheritance
and our cup" Ps 16:5
b) It means believing that the Lord "maintains our lot"
Ps 16:5
c) It means that we are happy and contented with whatever the Lord
gives to us as our inheritance Ps 16:6
2. With reference to "death"
a) "You will not leave my soul in Sheol"
b) Messianic application Acts 2:25-31
i. Peter believes that this passage had definite reference to the
Lord Jesus
ii. He argues that this passage veils the doctrine of the Resurrection
iii. The implications are deep. Can we trust the Lord at death?
HOW
DO WE DEVELOP TRUST IN THE LORD?
1. The Lord gives us "counsel" Ps 16:7
2. Our part is to seek to be instructed "in the night season"
Ps 16:7
3. We are to "set the Lord before us always" Ps 16:8
4. He is to be "at our right hand" Ps 16:8
5. If there is this deep sense of trust, then we "should not
be moved" Ps 16:8 (Cf. Ps 62:2, 6)
THE FRUIT OF TRUST
1. Trust in the Lord should cause us to experience "fullness
of joy" Ps 16:9, 11
2. There must also be real and definite sense of "hope"
Ps 16:9
3. The Lord will "show us the path of life" Ps 16:11
