"THAT
THE SCRIPTURE MIGHT BE FULFILLED..."
KNOWLEDGE
OF THE SCRIPTURES
1. Unquestionably, Jesus knew the Scriptures. He referred to the Scriptures "As the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water..." John 7:38
2. He spoke of them as the "command" of the Father John 10:18
3. Or simply as the "will" of the Father John 4:34
4. Or "doctrine" John 7:16
CONSCIOUSNESS
OF THE ROLE OF THE SCRIPTURES
1. The Scriptures were meant to be fulfilled
2. There are many reasons why this should be the case:-
a) The Scriptures display the Wisdom of God
b) The Scriptures describe the Will of God
c) The Scriptures prescribe the way of life for mankind
d) The Scriptures being divine, will always be fulfilled
(Blessed is the man who desires to fulfil the Scriptures happily)
APPLICATION
OF THE SCRIPTURES TO LIFE
1. Jesus humbly submitted Himself to the Scriptures
2. This included His submission to much suffering and even death
3. He trusted in the Scriptures
4. He consciously applied the Scriptures in His life
5. That the Scriptures might be fulfilled John 13:18 (Cf. John 17:12)
CHECKING
OUR REGARD FOR THE SCRIPTURES
1. The Scriptures were the very food/drink of the Lord Jesus John 4:34
2. He taught that they were "spirit and life" John 6:63
3. He taught the Scriptures as "truth" that frees a person from the most powerful bonds of sin John 8:32
WHERE
THERE IS ONLY KNOWLEDGE OF THE SCRIPTURES AND LITTLE MORE
1. "You search the Scriptures..." John 5:39
2. "Has not the Scriptures said..." John 7:42
(Knowledge not mixed with faith avails little... Cf Heb 4:2)
SCRIPTURES
AND PRAYER
1. Prayer that comes from a deep and thorough knowledge of the Scriptures
2. Prayer that comes from a desire to fulfil God's will
