John 17                                                                                                         27 March 2000

"And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent" John 17:3

"Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You" John 17:7

"For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You, and they have believed that You sent Me" John 17:8

1. Simple Knowledge - "that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent" John 17:3 

2. Complex Knowledge - "Now they have known that ALL things which You have given me are from You..." John 17:7 

3. Knowledge centred in God's Word - "I have given to them the words which You have given me..." John 17:8 

4. Profound Knowledge - where knowledge becomes belief/faith - "And they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You, and they have believed that You sent Me." John 17:8 

1. On the superficial level, it is mere intellectual comprehension of facts. 

2. At a deeper level, it requires revelation/illumination from God to understand spiritual things. 

3. It is a deep privilege indeed to truly know God, and a deep understanding of God is possible only when He reveals Himself.

1. A deep knowledge of God is possible only when He reveals Himself to us 

2. A deep knowledge of God is not possible through mere academia
