MENTIONS OF GOD'S NAME

1. Moses' concern - on the threshold of becoming God's special servant, the deliverer of the Children of Israel from their Egyptian bondage. "What is His NAME?" Ex 3:13

 

2. God's reply - "I AM THAT I AM... The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob has sent... This is My NAME forever, and this is My Memorial (Name) to all generations" Exodus 3:14-15

 

3. "You shall not take the NAME of the LORD your God in vain..." Exodus 20:7

 

4. "That you may fear this glorious and awesome NAME, THE LORD YOUR GOD" Deut 28:58

 

5. "But I come to you in the NAME of the LORD of Hosts, the God of the armies to Israel..." 1 Sam 17:45

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF GOD'S NAME

1. It reflects the Person of God (His glorious attributes especially)

 

2. It is something that God guards jealously

 

3. It signifies (the) relationship between God and His people

 

4. God's Name is to be revered, and never invoked in vain

 

5. God's Name represents His authority

 

SIGNIFICANT STATEMENTS OF THE LORD JESUS WITH REFERENCE TO THE NAME OF GOD

 

1. THE MANIFESTATION OF GOD

"I have manifested Your NAME" John 17:6 "

I have declared to them Your Name, and will declare it" John 17:26

("I have come in My Father's Name..." John 5:43)

a) To introduce God as FATHER especially

b) To show Him as a God who loved His people

c) To encourage believers to draw close to God as Father

 

2. THE INVOCATION OF GOD'S NAME

"Keep through Your Name" John 17:11

"I kept them in Your Name" John 17:12

a) God's Name, once invoked properly means that God involves and commits Himself to answering that request

b) In this instance, the invocation of God's Name is with reference to our safe-keeping

 

"HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME"

(In Practical Terms)

1. Believe in His NAME fully

 

2. Know the Lord's NAME intimately

 

3. Guard the NAME of the Lord jealously

 

4. Speak God's NAME softly and tenderly

 

5. Proclaim Faith in His NAME boldly

 

6. Rejoice in His NAME confidently

 

7. Never utter His NAME in profanity

 

8. Never use His NAME lightly

 

9. Pray in His NAME humbly
