A Tremendous Example Of In-Depth Praying   

 

“As He Was Accustomed”  Luke 22:39

1.  Learning to pray takes practice

2.  Prayers take time

3.  Setting aside a time and place for prayer a part of effective praying

Personal Practice Of Prayer

1.  Personal, solitary prayer pattern   “And He was withdrawn from

     them about a stone’s throw...”   Luke 22:41

2.  Kneeling...   “And prayed, saying...”   Luke 22:41

3.     Verbalisation...   “And prayed, saying...”   Luke 22:41-42

 

Encouragement To Learn How To Pray

1.  Further response to the disciples’ request to learn how to pray 

     Luke 11:1.

2.  One of the many purposes of prayer... “that you may not enter into temptation”  Luke 22:40.

3.  Special encouragement to pray - the ministry of angels  

     Luke 22:43 “Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.”

4.  No condemnation... even if the disciples were found to be too tired

     to pray.

 

Struggles In Prayer

1.  “Natural” (human) struggles

     - The choice between life and death; peace and pain; joy and sorrow.

2.  “Spiritual” (supernatural) struggles

     - In the invisible, but very real spiritual world.

 

Victory In Prayer

1.  Earnestness in prayer 

          “And He prayed more earnestly...”   Luke 22:44

2.  Total focus/concentration 

          “And His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down

          to the ground”   Luke 22:44

3.  Yielding to the will of God 

          “Not my will, but Yours be done”   Luke 22:42
