Text: Isaiah 10-12

 

PRONOUNCEMENT OF WOE AGAINST ASSYRIA  (Isaiah 10)

 

1.   Assyria's wicked programme of conquest of weaker nations

a)   They bring misfortune                            Isa 10:1

b)   They rob the needy of justice                  Isa 10:2

c)   They take what is right from the poor      Isa 10:2

d)   They bully the widows                           Isa 10:2

e)   They rob the fatherless                          Isa 10:2

 

2.   Pronouncement of Anger and Punishment against Assyria   (Isa 10:4)

"His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still"

 

3.   Assyria, originally an instrument of God's punitive discipline of Israel

a)   "The rod of My anger"

      "The staff in whose hand is My indignation"   Isa 10:5

b)   "I will send him..."

      "I will give him charge..."   Isa 10:6

 

4.   The hidden agenda of Assyria exposed

a)   "He does not mean so..."

      "Nor does his heart think so..."   Isa 10:7

b)   "It is in his heart to destroy"

      "And cut of not a few nations..."   Isa 10:7

 

5.   The arrogance of Assyria                 

a)   "Are not my princes altogether kings?"   Isa 10:8

b)   "Is not Samaria like Damascus?"   Isa 10:9 

          (As Assyria has conquered other cites, so it thinks that Samaria, the capital of Israel is no different from others)

c)   Assyria exalts the idols it possesses   Isa 10:10-11

d)   It despises both Samaria and Jerusalem   Isa 10:11

 

6.   The punishment of Assyria pronounced  (Isa 10:12-15)

a)   The punishment of the pride and arrogance of Assyria   Isa 10:12

b)   Assyria boasts of its "strength"   Isa 10:12

c)   It also boasts of its "wisdom"   Isa 10:12

d)   It takes pride in its conquests   Isa 10:13-14

 

7.   God humbles Assyria

a)   Assyria is no more than an axe, whereas God is He who handles the axe   Isa 10:15

b)   Assyria is no more than a saw, whereas God is He who holds the saw   Isa 10:15

c)   Assyria is no more than a rod/staff, whereas God is He who holds it   Isa 10:15

 

8.   God will destroy Assyria

a)   "Leanness among his fat ones"   Isa 10:16

b)   "The Light of Israel" will consume Assyria   Isa 10:17-19

 

9.   The Remnant of Israel will Return   (Isa 10:20-23)

a)   There will be a Remnant   Isa 10:20

b)   They will escape the full ravages of war   Isa 10:20

c)   They will learn never to depend on anyone except the Lord       Isa 10:21

d)   The Remnant will return to God   Isa 10:21

e)   There will be a Remnant that will return to the Land of Israel   Isa 10:22-23

 

10.  A Plea to Israel to Maintain Faith in God's Word of Prophecy  

      (Isa 10:24-34)

a)   The yoke of Assyria will be broken and destroyed   Isa 10:27

b)   Isaiah describes the route-march of the Assyrians (Isa 10:28-32), and though there are some who are terrified, yet he calls for faith and confidence in God

c)   "Behold the Lord,

      the Lord of Hosts"   Isa 10:33

d)   He will "lop off the bough with terror..."   Isa 10:33-34

 

11.  A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE (A Messianic Prophecy)   (Isa 11)

a)   God will send forth His Deliverer   Isa 11:1-5

b)   The Spirit of the Lord will be upon Him   Isa 11:2

c)   He will bring about peace on the earth   Isa 11:3-5

d)   He will slay the wicked   Isa 11:4

e)   He will gird Himself with Righteousness and Faithfulness   Isa 11:5

 

12.  A Glimpse of the Messianic Kingdom that the Lord will establish  (Isa 11:6-10)

a)   "The wolf shall dwell with the lamb"   Isa 11:6

      "The leopard shall lie down with the young goat"   Isa 11:6

      "The calf and the young lion and the fatling together"   Isa 11:6

      "And a little child shall lead them"   Isa 11:6 (Cf. Isa 11:7-8)

b)   There will be absolute peace and the earth will be full of the knowledge of God   Isa 11:9

c)   "The Gentiles shall seek Him"   Isa 11:10

d)   The Remnant will be recovered from the uttermost part of the earth   Isa 11:11-12

e)   There will be no more rivalry between Ephraim and Judah   Isa 11:13

f)    They will be fully united   Isa 11:14

g)   The enemies will be completely destroyed   Isa 11:15-16

 

13.  Israel will have every reason to sing to the Lord   (Isa 12)

a)   The theme of the song will be one of "Praise"   Isa 12:1, 4

b)   The content of the song will be of God and the salvation He brings   Isa 12:2, 5-6

c)   The spirit of the song will be one of great joy   Isa 12:3
