Text:  Deuteronomy 17-19

MISCELLANEOUS LAWS

 

The Role Of The Priests / Levites / Judges   (Deut 17:1-13)

1)   They are to function as "judges"   Deut 17:9

2)   Their judgements are to be adhered to   Deut 17:10-12

3)   They are empowered to even pronounce the death sentence

      Deut 17:10-12

 

The Role Of Kings   (Deut 17:14-20)

1)   To choose a king approved by the Lord   Deut 17:14-15

2)      Prohibitions placed on kings   Deut 17:16-17

3)   A special command to have copy of the Scriptures made for

      his personal reading   Deut 17:18-20

 

God's Provision For The Priests / Levites   (Deut 18:1-8)

1.   They are not allotted land as the other tribes   Deut 18:1-2

2.   The LORD Himself is their inheritance   Deut 18:2

3.   The provision of the priests   Deut 18:3-4

4.   Their vocation: "chosen... to stand to minister in the Name

      of the Lord..."   Deut 18:5

5.   In summary... "They shall have equal portions..."   Deut 18:8

 

Strict Prohibitions Concerning The Occult   (Deut 18:9-14)

1.   Occultic practices named   Deut 18:9-11

2.   They are pronounced as "abomination to the Lord"   Deut 18:12

3.   They are dispossessed from the land of Canaan because

      of occultic practices   Deut 18:14

 

The Prophetic Ministry   (Deut 18:15-22)

1.   The prophetic ministry will not die with Moses   Deut 18:15-15

2.   There will be others, and they will speak with great authority 

      Deut 18:18

3.   There will be a SPECIAL MESSIANIC PROPHET  

      Deut 18:18-19

4.   Severe warning against those who profess themselves

      "prophets"   Deut 18:20-22

 

Cities Of Refuge   (Deut 19:1-13)

1.   For humane reasons (Three cities initially... more could be added) 

      Deut 19:2, 7, 9

2.   For the protection of "innocent blood"   Deut 19:10

3.   However, these cities are not meant to shelter the guilty  

      Deut 19:12-13

 

In the Mouth Of Two Or Three Witnesses   (Deut 19:15-21)

1.   Single witness insufficient for conviction   Deut 19:15-17

2.   The work of the Priests / Judges   Deut 19:18-19

3.   Justice to be carefully meted out at all times   Deut 19:20-21
